Building Opportunities
The Campaign for the Future Home of Community Support Services of Missouri
For over 40 years, Community Support Services of Missouri (CSS) has provided services and programs to our community of over 1,300 individuals with developmental disabilities in Southwest Missouri. We exist to ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to live a life defined by potential and we believe that our every endeavor should increase quality of life, independence, and meaningful inclusion in our community.
Throughout the years, we have seen the need for our services grow in our community, and currently, this need exceeds the supply of these services currently available to those who need them. As an organization, we have grown from nearly 260 employees to over 360 employees in a little under two years due to the demand for our services, and the scope to which we provide care has outgrown our current facilities. To continue providing the best possible care to the individuals we serve, we face the need to expand our facilities and increase our programmatic capacity to enhance our quality of care.
We are launching our first-ever capital fundraising campaign, Building Opportunities, to address these needs. This comprehensive $6 million capital project aims to enhance our facilities and increase capacity for our Community Day Program.
Campaign Goals
Day Program Expansion
Increasing capacity and programming for our Community Day Program to accommodate approximately 100 individuals.
Mission Support
Increasing administrative spaces to align with our growth and increased staffing needs, enabling us to offer more diverse programming and fulfill our mission of serving those with disabilities.
Our current administrative building, the former Alcott School located at 2312 Annie Baxter Avenue, Joplin, has served us well for many years; however, it is now too small for our operations, is not fully ADA accessible, and requires excessive maintenance and utility costs since it is nearly 100 years old. With the purchase and renovation of our new home, located at 809 South Illinois Avenue, Joplin, Missouri, we embark on a new and exciting chapter for our organization. This new facility will house multiple functions of our growing organization, including Executive, Leadership, Administration, and Direct Care Providers, as well as be the official location for our expanded Community Day Program. Additionally, our new home will feature our Training Department, storm shelters for the safety of all staff and individuals, and a new Teaching Kitchen for Day Program individuals.
About the Community Day Program
Our Community Day Program is designed to support individuals who have graduated high school to learn new skills and gain confidence in pursuing personal goals and reaching their highest level of independence. Each individual’s day is based on their needs and interests. Activities are provided in both small groups and individual settings. The current location for the Day Program limits capacity to approximately 40 individuals served, and the new building increases that capacity to 100. In addition, this new space will allow for the current Day Program building (located on Jackson Avenue, Joplin) to become the designated site for a new Behavioral Day Program, intended to serve those with a dual diagnosis and increased behavioral needs.
With your help, we can create a new home that will serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for the individuals we serve in our community. Contributions of naming opportunities and one-time gifts will be used to support the building investment and renovation costs for our new home at 809 South Illinois Avenue in Joplin. Gifts are 100% tax deductible. Please consider supporting our Building Opportunities campaign today. We thank you in advance for your generous support of those we serve in Southwest Missouri.
Our new building features multiple spaces that are available for naming recognition. Please contact us at (417) 624-4514 ext. 180 for more information.

Gifts of Stock
CSS welcomes gifts of appreciated stocks or securities, which can provide you with tax benefits while also supporting our Building Opportunities Campaign. CSS benefits by selling the stock without paying taxes on the gain, while you benefit from making a contribution that would be larger than what you might have been able to donate in cash.
To make a donation of stock, contact us (417) 624-4515 x180 or email jthomas@cssmo.org for instructions on how to transfer the shares.
Planned Gift
Creating a meaningful legacy is an important consideration for many individuals. One way to ensure your legacy endures is by making a gift in your will or living trust, also known as a bequest. You can choose to gift a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after all other provisions are made. By including CSS in your estate planning, you can support our mission and make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals we serve.
Please contact us at (417) 624-4515 x180 or email jthomas@cssmo.org for more information on planned giving.
